For me, there has never been an firmware upgrade that didn't cause major headache & require hours of maintenance. Even some package updates broke the system in the past.

Today, I tried to update from 23.0.2 to 23.0.5 while preserving my settings, but this prevented the router from doing IPv4 at all. 🤡 Only thanks to SSH over IPv6 I could reset OpenWrt entirely to default and manually set up everything again. Couldn't bother to repair the wreck.

Not blaming anyone, I'm just frustrated.

OpenWrt absolutely does not recommend people apply package updates except in specific cases to fix security exploits. The normal way OpenWrt is supposed to be upgraded is by a new point release. In general full firmware upgrades should just work. But you should always take a settings backup first. There's also the attended system upgrade package which will give you a list of packages to install after the firmware upgrade.

@dlakelan Didn't know that, thanks! 😳 I always just followed the advice of @kuketzblog to regularly install updates: kuketz-blog.de/openwrt-update-

The firmware upgrade itself went fine, only restoring the backup (both automatically during the upgrade process and, after resetting, by manually uploading the archive) resulted in those IPv4 issues. 😕

Yeah, There's an official warning on that page about mass upgrading packages being discouraged.

If there's a specific bug fix or security patch it makes sense to upgrade that specific package. But for the most part you should just install point updates. The firmware builder can be used to build an image already including all the packages you use regularly. Point updates shouldn't break settings but major version updates often do.

I never recommended auto updates on OpenWrt.

Ah, yes! The upgrade from 23.0.3 to 23.0.5 fcked the firmware on 2/2 access points. I had to reflash OpenWrt from U-Boot. 1 hour per AP, still need to do one.
