Here's what I think Mastodon could do to take a giant leap forward in usability, especially for new users.

@FediTips posted a wonderful link to a blog post filled with great people and organizations to follow. They are in the form of link to those masto accounts.

Now, unless there is some trick I don't know this is where the problem comes in. If I click on the links it takes me to their account on THEIR instance. Since I am not housed there, I can't follow them on my account. This is tremendously confusing for someone coming from something like the DeadBird site, who is used to those links always opening in that app.

To follow those accounts I have to copy the link and paste it into the search bar, then follow up (if it shows up -- it might not be federated with my server).

It would be awesome if when I clicked on those links they opened inside my Mastodon account so I could just click follow.

I hope this is a possibility!

I'm not sure what you are using to access Mastodon, but if you click on an account link in a Mastodon post (such as @FediFollows) it should just take you to that account's profile page entirely within your own Mastodon server. You can click on the follow button there etc.

Do you mean the links on the website fedi.directory?

Links to the Fediverse from outside the Fediverse do open an account's own original page. Your browser has no way of knowing what else to do with it?

@FediTips @FediFollows

Yes, I was talking about external links, like on another website. Someone else pointed out (correctly) that if I click on the follow link on another instance I get a popup where I can put in the name of my own instance, which then opens and I can do my follow.

Works well. Thanks!

@FediTips

I will add that it turns out that it is actually much easier than it was when I first started using Mastodon to do this, so most of my post is now moot.

Maybe it is more a browser thing than a Mastodon thing, but it would still be nice if clicking on a Masto address opened it in my instance which is open on my browser.

Maybe that is something that @Vivaldi would be interested in doing?

@MylesRyden @Vivaldi

There was a browser extension called FediAct which automatically logged you in if you were browsing another server's website, so you could do exactly what you were asking for.

Unfortunately FediAct doesn't seem to be maintained any more 😞

@FediTips @Vivaldi

Doesn't seem necessary when that function is in Mastodon (or where ever it is!)

Would be nice to label MastoLinks as some type or another so every link opened your home instance. I have no idea how to make that happen. 😉
