@flutergork @georgetakei just to play devils advocate here. I am in no way comparing the two in any way other then the way presented. Nelson Mandela was serving a life sentence in prison. All an incumbent would need to do was make whatever your leading opponent was doing a felony and you’d never face opposition. It’s a nuanced issue.

Perhaps a better example would be, e.g., Brazil, where a corrupt judicial system got Lula imprisoned on trumpted up charges (sorry) to pave the way for Bolsanaro to get elected.

But once you have corruption in the judicial system, it doesn't take too long down that particular dystopian road before any constitution becomes irrelevant, de facto. Which brings us back to the US…
