Föderation EN Do 01.05.2025 17:30:23

@amapanda there is still hope

Föderation EN Do 01.05.2025 17:36:00

@amapanda never used this (for germany / NRW)

Föderation EN Do 01.05.2025 17:41:13

@amapanda I cannot use it since about 3 months ago...

Föderation EN Do 01.05.2025 17:58:20

@schenklklopfer it's been very flakey for me for ages and ages

Föderation EN Do 01.05.2025 19:04:44

@schenklklopfer
It worked in iD but not in . That made me use iD.
@amapanda

Föderation EN Do 01.05.2025 20:13:06

@nakaner aaaah, I always use . @amapanda

Föderation EN Do 01.05.2025 20:49:06

@amapanda In , we can use aerial imagery provided by ČÚZK (~ Czech Geodetic and Cadastral Office). And specifically in , there are two imageries (summer and winter) provided by IPR (~ Institute for Planning and Development ... a city-owned organization).

These imageries are more recent and more precise than Microsoft's one. I think that it's much more better way to request public administration bodies to provide such imageries than to rely on the ones provided by private companies.

Föderation EN Do 01.05.2025 22:15:33

@aikencz @amapanda It’s complicated in many countries, and became even more complicated (read - no more public imagery) after a certain neighbouring country to the east went from just fascist to literal war in Europe :/

Föderation EN Do 01.05.2025 21:48:19

@amapanda In mice ^w josm :)

iD should be good for a while yet.

Föderation EN Fr 02.05.2025 04:55:54

@amapanda hmmm... probably Bing's Streetside would be the same as well (no longer perfectly working in JOSM but A-OK in iD and its derivatives)

Föderation EN Fr 02.05.2025 06:54:18

@amapanda giant corporation Microsoft does not give a shit about Openstreetmap afterall

Föderation EN Fr 02.05.2025 07:10:00

@thibaultmol @amapanda they'd give a shit if the ODbL was updated to say "Everyone except Microsoft"

Föderation EN Fr 02.05.2025 07:34:41

@CjMalone @thibaultmol as if the corporate users follow all the parts of the ODbL

Föderation EN Fr 02.05.2025 12:06:30

@amapanda it needs to be said, regardless of if MS are the baddies, the goodies, or more likely something in between, we are creating the problem for ourselves by making ourselves dependent on one specific source.

Föderation EN Fr 02.05.2025 12:40:37

@simon @amapanda It's both traditional for OSM to depend on a single "good" source (remember Yahoo), and also it's hard to find a place where there's no sub-meter imagery apart from Bing.

Föderation EN Fr 02.05.2025 12:43:59

@zverik @amapanda we don't "have" to map from imagery.

PS: yahoo and good in the same sentence tss tss luckily they had nearly no coverage here so the damage was limited.

Föderation EN Fr 02.05.2025 12:48:38

@simon @amapanda Indeed we don't. But many tutorials and courses on OpenStreetMap start with that, and often don't go anywhere else. So we do have to acknowledge that the majority of mappers don't even know about an option to just go outside.

(Heh, yeah, my city mapped from Yahoo was the reason for Replace Geometry JOSM tool)

Föderation EN Fr 02.05.2025 13:34:15

@simon @zverik @amapanda if aerial imagery isn't important then surely there's no problem...

In reality, a huge amount of the value of OSM comes from mapping which is only really feasible with aerial imagery.

At any rate, we still have Esri which is better than Bing in many cases, but it will be a concern if there's only a single provider.

Föderation EN Fr 02.05.2025 14:56:06

@russss yeah, Aerial Imagery has been great for OSM.

And it's a shame that we've lost 2 large global aerial imagery sources in the last few years.

Föderation EN Fr 02.05.2025 12:41:18

@simon yeah, you'd think we'd learn.

Föderation EN Fr 02.05.2025 14:31:30

@amapanda

Föderation EN Fr 02.05.2025 14:42:46

@amapanda Ugh, almost all maps in Indonesia are using Bing for mapping. The rest of the maps have ±4 meters offset. I doubt that casual users here even know how to calibrate it.
