Imagine a stranger spreads lies about you. They tell everyone you're doing horrible stuff, the worst crimes imaginable. They make videos, articles, livestreams, all pushing the same lies designed to make everyone hate and fear you.

Would you "just block them"?

What happens when other people don't block them? When other people believe them, follow them, share their lies?

What if this turns into real life abuse? If someone attacks you or your family?

This is what vulnerable minorities face because of badly-moderated social media:

@FediThing This is not some future scenario or theoretical event, it is going on now and has been for a while.

@wbpeckham

Yup. It is frustrating how in denial so many people are about how horrific the situation is.

It's not just in one country:

I wonder if people on here would be so comfortable federating with Meta if the massacres and genocides were happening in rich countries.

@FediThing An excellent parallel to highlight how media performs its dirty work.

@FediThing This happens in small towns all the time. Someone, for one reason or another, (they might be from out of town) becomes "othered". Their othering is constantly confirmed in gossip in closed FB and Whatsapp groups, in church coffee mornings etc. and people who have never even met them accept whatever is said about them as "truth", because of the seeming consensus backing it.
It's the closest a white person can come to experiencing real prejudice. They are pre-judged.
