Genuine question: did you ask him about Meta now permitting hate speech against vulnerable groups?

If anyone wants their own personal copy of Wikipedia on their computer, phone or tablet, a copy that cannot be deleted or edited by anyone else, there's an app called @kiwix that makes this possible:

You can use the same app to install offline copies of lots of wiki-powered sites and many others too. I have a copy of WikiVoyage on my phone so wherever I go there's always some kind of info about it without needing an internet connection.

Just a little bit frustrating to read people saying "the Fediverse should have starter packs" when I've spent the last four+ years hand-curating recommended accounts to follow on @FediFollows and https://fedi.directory

I'm not the only person doing this kind of initiative, the Trunk directory (https://communitywiki.org/trunk) was the first, and the Fediverse.info directory by @dansup (https://fediverse.info/explore/people) is an automated way for people to add themselves to suggested lists.

We already have these things on the Fedi, people just need to ask around and discover them, and let their friends know about them.

If you are one of the privileged lucky 4% who do have a vote, *please* use it to stop him, for the sake of all humanity. 🙏

Social networks need to be owned by the communities that use them. If social networks are owned by ad-supported corporations, they end up manipulating and exploiting users in unethical ways.

As far as I know the Fediverse is the only social network allowing communities to actually own their own servers?

BlueSky is backed by VC money and structured so its "servers" depend on expensive-to-run corporate-owned content feeds. Its long-term plan is that these corporate BlueSky feeds would carry advertising. In the long term, when BS's VC backers demand returns on their investment, it will mean enshittification.

Imagine a stranger spreads lies about you. They tell everyone you're doing horrible stuff, the worst crimes imaginable. They make videos, articles, livestreams, all pushing the same lies designed to make everyone hate and fear you.

Would you "just block them"?

What happens when other people don't block them? When other people believe them, follow them, share their lies?

What if this turns into real life abuse? If someone attacks you or your family?

Some random really nice Fediverse things to look forward to later in 2024 🤞

- @dansup's Pixelfed apps finally getting into mainstream app stores, could greatly widen Pixelfed's audience

- @gotosocial leaving alpha testing. It's a lightweight safety-conscious microblogging platform, could be a good alternative to Mastodon.

- @Feditext being released, Metatext had a lot of fans even after development stopped and will be great to see a direct successor app
