@drfootleg @gadgetoid @gsuberland I can think of much safer sources to use than a liberated chunk of Am241 many times stronger than a smoke detector... You need very little radiation to make a cloud chamber work, and less is usually better. A bead of uranium glass or glazed pottery might work. Refer to the safety notes for those before buying them, though.
