Humans independently edit Wikipedia for humans. They don’t have any Ads or cannot be bullied into removing content. Wikipedia is free from AI slop. No wonder tech bros with AI companies want to eliminate it so that their fake AI text generator can show or push propaganda. Please do not let Wikipedia die. It is an independent source and far more reliable than Gen AI companies. It is a real shame that it comes to this.

@nixCraft What's happening exactly? Why is wp dying?

Föderation EN Sa 26.04.2025 21:50:01

@adipoeserPursch @nixCraft Oh? Going for WIKIMEDIA of all things? Also, there is this very convenient button that shows the edit history of every section on every page in ALL of wikipedia.

Short version is someone in Trump's DOJ sent them a letter threatening to take away their tax exempt status as a way of hurting them if they don't start censoring and changing entries to satisfy what this administration wants it to say.

This doesn't mean they're dying (or that the threat actually holds water) but it's a very very bad sign.

@devilonger @nixCraft
Trump's people are starting to make the opening moves on attacking it and probably intending to destroy it.

@dougmerritt @nixCraft thanks for explaining it. (Nice math pun in your username, I liked it :D)

@nixCraft

I don’t think it’s always independent.
And sometimes it’s a pain in the ass.

But it’s far better than anything else what we have! And it’s mostly a reliable source of information!

Which I cannot say about US media or tech oligarchs bullshit.

So yeah - safe Wikipedia!

Föderation EN Sa 26.04.2025 21:44:52

@nixCraft The funny thing about it is that they also rely it on the first source of data to feed into their LLMs...

They want to destroy it, but also not at the same time.

Föderation EN Sa 26.04.2025 22:08:42

@nixCraft Start downloading all we can now.

Föderation EN Sa 26.04.2025 22:08:48

@nixCraft Does it mean I should download copy of wikipedia in languages I interested in, e. g. English, Ukrainian, Georgian, some other language(s) for sake of preserving it?

I also suspect that wikimedia foundation should register a European fallback entity and move to EU before their employees got arrested.

Föderation EN Sa 26.04.2025 22:12:24

@nixCraft Another unfortunate thing is that a lot of schools and libraries have big posters warning you that Wikipedia is not a trustworthy source of information, because "anyone can edit it, and therefore it may contain inaccurate and unreliable information". But, at least Wikipedia is more trustworthy than these AI tools that these companies keep pushing, if only for the fact that it doesn't have an AI tool of its own.

It's especially ironic.

You know how many editors are working on high traffic Wikipedia articles? Dozens of people working, out of the goodness of their heart, to keep the quality good and information accurate.

And how many editors are working on the same article for Encarta (or whoever is the biggest encyclopedia maker now)? A few. Certainly not dozens.

@nixCraft It's hubris at its peek: the Wikimedia projects are likely the first sources to be scraped by tech-companies' LLMs due to their outstanding quality and vast quantity on a plethora of topics, all the while attempting to remove funding of the organisation and to harass their maintainers.

It's heartrending. :blobcat_cwy:
