Impressive what you can pull off with gullible victims that buy internet-of-shit devices.
Imagine someone was to sell you a digital picture frame for 160€$ - yes, expensive - but for just 2€$ per month on top, it even allows you to display your own pictures! What a sweet deal.
Now imagine - if you can - that they cease to offer this feature and decide to display ads instead of your pictures. On your digital picture frame. Which you paid for to have in your home.

@nblr and people wonder why I boycott Amazon.

Föderation EN Sa 24.08.2024 11:49:32

@Extelec I always found it strange to find it strange to want a microphone in your home that's connected to some corpo's infra. Glad to see I'm not alone.

@nblr will Amazon echo start doing voice ads next ?

Föderation EN Sa 24.08.2024 12:00:15

@Extelec Don't give them ideas.
Audio ads on amazon echo devices would be kinda funny though. "Alexa, wake me up in half an hour" - "I've set an alarm" … 30 minutes later … "*peem-poom* we would like to interrupt your afternoon nap for an important announcement from today's sponsor snoozeright™! Get your personal snoozeright™ pillow now for 10% off by saying 'alright i want one' right now. *peem-poom*"

@nblr @Extelec ... don't give them ideas!

@andypiper @nblr I can't think of a better way of promoting the alternatives

Föderation EN Sa 24.08.2024 12:26:00

@andypiper @nblr @Extelec
They already do that.

After issuing a command, the Alexa can say "Did you know, I can also do XYX. Just ask me for more information."

It is simple to turn off if you don't want it.

Frankly, it's a mixed bag. Discoverability of new features is close to impossible on a voice assistant. So the prompts can be handy.
