How come when I’m in the official #Mastodon app and I click a link to a mastodon post, it opens a web browser within the app and shows me the post in the mastodon web client and I’m not logged in?

Why doesn’t it just navigate to the post within the app, as if I had just clicked any regular post in a timeline?

It’s a bit weird. Am I missing something? Am I doing something wrong?

Does it do this for all Mastodon posts, or do some of them open within the app?

For example, do links to posts on mastodon.social open in the app or as a web page?

p.s. You might want to try Ice Cubes for iPhone, or Toot! or Ivory.

Toot! does open links seamlessly for me, but the official app doesn't.

@feditips I’ll see if it changes for different instances. I had wondered if that has something to do with it. I also wondered if it was something to do with my server instance, or to do with app, or to do with a setting in account.

I'm still not 100% sure what affects it (that was what the survey was for) but it's definitely worth experimenting as it seems to behave differently in different apps.

@feditips Ah-ha! This is true. I just tired the same mastodon link in Metatext, and it loaded just fine as a toot within the app and I was logged in and able to favourite the post. I miss metatext sometimes. It’s very nostalgic now. Still says “Toot” on the list button 🥲

Metatext did have a lot of fans, yes! There's a community project to continue Metatext development, you can follow it at @Feditext

Feditext is still in testing, but they'll announce on that account when it's properly released.

Not all clients do that to be fair and it's not much to do with Gargron.

You need a client that follows threads across instances. The two I use do this; #senji on desktop and @apps on Android.

I've more or less stopped using #ios but #metatext used to do the job well when I left the Apple cart.

It's not as simple as that any more.

A lot of apps now open the links directly instead of in a browser.

I did a survey about this a while ago and most people said Mastodon links open for them within the app.

Weirdly though, even people on the same app and platform sometimes get different results. There may be some network issue at play.
