vs. puzzles me a bit. From the outside, this looks much like a people don't like each other problem.
Gitea is still alive & OSS. Forgejo has 2k+ more commits, looks like that's mostly because they update dependencies like crazy.

I've got them both installed and they still look/feel/work exactly the same.

@moreentropy Why do you think they don't like each other? 🤔

Föderation EN Mo 03.02.2025 22:19:53

@Beowulf Why was a hard fork necessary?

Föderation EN Mo 03.02.2025 22:20:55

@moreentropy Because of the Gitea leadership, not the community 🤔 forgejo.org/compare-to-gitea/#

Föderation EN Mo 03.02.2025 22:45:30

@Beowulf IMHO that would justify a soft fork in case shit hits the fan.
From a user's perspective, gitea is still delivering OSS and has a history of reliably doing so. I'm not against Forgejo at all, but from what I see I just can't decide which of both is the more sustainable choice.

@moreentropy I think Forgejo has a bright future under the umbrella of Codeberg and with the core values it has.

@moreentropy
Forgejo started as a soft-fork of course. However, that was becoming more difficult and has serious challenges during development.

You can read about the background to become a hard fork in forgejo.org/2024-02-forking-fo

@moreentropy Forgejo was initially created, when Gitea was basically taken over by a for-profit company.

Here's the differences that Forgejo sees: forgejo.org/compare-to-gitea/

@moreentropy me, too. i switched to fogejo right after the fork because gitea broke while upgrading. And every release has breaking changes now. I just need something lightweight and extendable to my needs. I don’t need no other gitlab. Next time it breaks, I write my own thing in fucking php.

Föderation EN Di 04.02.2025 06:17:36

@jfroehlich I'm running both in containers w/ postgres db and never had any issues upgrading, both just keep on working without intervention 🤔

Föderation EN Di 04.02.2025 08:04:24

@moreentropy Yea, It’s running in a container for me as well. I had customized a lot in the config, added custom templates to make it look pretty disabled features I don’t need, etc. Now it's just the basic install with an sqlitedb backed up with a stupid bash script using scp. Didn't have time to investigate what broke it so I just did a fresh setup, imported the repos and got on with my live.
