Hey, experts: I have a question. On my blog, I embed comments from the . I also link to the comment thread on my instance. However, nobody else is using my instance. Is there a service where I can pass it a URL to a note, and it will ask the user what instance they use, then direct there instance to go get that note so they can respond? It currently looks like this, comments at the bottom; I'd like to replace the "this post on the fediverse" link with some way for users to pick their instance: stuff.interfree.ca/2025/05/02/sleep-solutions.html

@fastfinge

What are you using to embed comments from the Fediverse?

What platform is your blog running on?

Föderation · Sa 03.05.2025 13:55:29

@FediTips It’s a static site generated by statiq. I’m pulling in the comments via JavaScript.

Hmm... I'm not sure, but I'll boost this from @homegrown to see if someone can help?

(I'll do it a bit later as I just posted something else on there a few minutes ago.)

@FediTips @homegrown Thanks! I love using the fediverse as my commenting system. It just makes it hard for people who don't follow me directly to participate, and I'd love a way to solve that problem.

@fastfinge @homegrown

Another option is to use a Fediverse-compatible blogging system (WriteFreely, WordPress, Ghost), but that wouldn't be static.

@FediTips @homegrown Also, none of those systems offer perfect screen reader accessibility for writing posts and modifying design and layout. They all have one or more issues, and at least one task a blind person can't complete without help.

@fastfinge

Ah, interesting. Thanks for that info, very useful to know. So your custom setup is more accessible?

Föderation · Sa 03.05.2025 18:38:22

@FediTips More accessible to me, anyway. It requires writing markdown in a text editor and running a powershell script on the command line. I'm not sure I would distribute it to others, as it's a bit specialized to my own needs and preferences.

@fastfinge

Okay, fair enough! I'll keep in mind the issues on the blogging platforms, wasn't aware of them before.

I've just boosted your original post, if someone can help they will probably reply directly to that post.

Föderation · Sa 03.05.2025 18:25:30

@FediTips @homegrown If it helps, I'm using a modified version of this library to pull the comments, with enhancements for screen reader accessibility, and changes to work with IceShrimp.NET instead of Mastodon: github.com/UppaJung/fediverse-comments

Föderation EN Sa 03.05.2025 18:27:05

@fastfinge

I'm not a web dev so I'm really not sure I can help, but there are web devs and self-hosters who follow the @homegrown account, hopefully someone there has an answer?

Föderation · Sa 03.05.2025 18:29:03

@FediTips @homegrown Here's hoping! There are already "share to mastodon" links that let users pick there instance. We just need a "view on mastodon" service that does the same thing with Mastodon posts so people can easily reply when given a link to a post.

@fastfinge

What kind of activitypub instance are you using to handle discussions? What are people actually replying to?
