Software since 1998.

Anti-DEI is white supremacy. Black lives matter. Trans lives matter. LGBT+ rights are human rights. Healthcare, security, a decent income, and housing with dignity are human rights. Abortion is healthcare. Science is our best hope as a species. Kindness and empathy are the noblest of human traits.

I block assholes and bigots.

I’ve just stumbled into another annoyance in the architecture: thread continuity is broken when an item in the chain is broken.

Suppose there is this thread of posts/replies, made by three users, and I wrote the last reply (C).

A → B → C

Suppose I wanted to find post A. Sadly, I don’t remember what post A contained (or A’s post is not searchable), but I do remember what I wrote in response in C. I look for my reply and find it, but much to my dismay, the poster of B has deleted their post. So now I have:

A → ✵ → C

Since B is missing, I can no longer find A.

I was under the assumption that ActivityPub provides for a tombstone in place of B, which allows the reply chain to continue to be traversed, but I don’t think that’s the case—the tombstone contains no reference to A at all.

This is particularly annoying because the longer the thread, the more likely this is to happen. I wonder if anyone is already looking at this issue?

Here’s a great summary of that “Ghost Engineer” nonsense that the Stanford researcher claims.

Nice response by to the self-entitled techbros who think they should be given slack for bad products.

The FaceTime ads were some of the most human of tech ads. It really showed how technology got out of the way of humanity. mastodon.social/@marioguzman/1

I guess this is how does these days.

First they require in-person , then they relocate business units from one location to another, and force those who can’t uproot their lives to leave.

The Apple location in isn’t going away. But they intentionally forced 121 people to choose between moving to , or lose their jobs. Make no mistake, this is a layoff.

Never mind the fact that is hostile to anyone with a uterus, or is not cishet—why the hell anyone would move *to* that state? If anything, Apple should be shutting down their Austin office, and paying for people to relocate to a state that better ensures their safety.

Haha I love this Australian anti-COVID PSA.

AVOID INFECTING PEOPLE YOU DRONGOS

Edit: OK this is making numbers, and I now think it’s more than likely that this is a clever edit of the original. Welp. It’s hilarious anyway. Enjoy it for what it’s worth!

Edit: The numbers seem to have come from this article:

“People who had more than one COVID-19 infection were three times more likely to be hospitalized and twice as likely to die than those who only had one infection. Those with multiple infections were also more vulnerable to other dangerous conditions; they were 3.5 times more likely to develop lung problems, 3 times more likely to have heart conditions, and 1.6 times more likely to have brain changes requiring care than people who had only had COVID-19 once.”

3D Touch was one of those times when (very expensive) hardware was put into production, and software was forced to produce something—anything—to showcase it.

The 3D Touch strain gauge was impressive. It measured grams-force so accurately that you could use it as a scale. Problem was, humans aren’t that good at applying precise amounts of force, especially when operating a bar of soap single-handed.

In fact, having force sensitivity turned out to be *detrimental* to the UX because people would accidentally press too hard and trigger something unintended. It made operating a touch screen device *harder* for many people, especially those with less-than-excellent fine motor control.
