@alice

Q: Do you use What Three Words?
A: No.

What Three Words has been shown to be inadequate and even dangerous for emergency services use.

There's a website listing the many failures at w3w.me.ss/

It's probably OK for pizza delivery, if you're willing to install yet another corporate surveillance app...

@bobjonkman this is an actually useful critique of W3W, with sources! Thank you 😊

I agree with the issues, and wouldn't use it for critical services (like emergency rescue, for sure!), though I think some are just as bad with other systems (such as lat/lon and numbers being easily transposed).

I've never installed the app, I've just used the site in a private browser, so it knows the *someone's* location.

@alice @bobjonkman I'm aware of W3W, but the proprietary nature of its algorithm has turned me off from ever considering using it.

I really like Open Location Codes (or Plus Codes) as an alternative. Yes, it was designed by Google, but the algorithm is open and has been incorporated into apps not run by surveillance companies. My only criticism is that it lacks a specification for a check digit.
