Hey @Gargron, can’t you vet accounts that are clearly bots? I’m blocking hundreds of accounts “___Deals” “CashApps” “GoFundMe” etc accounts, and it’s taking me an hour every damn morning.

Thanks.

@GottaLaff @Gargron The world (and not just the social media world) would be better if we just banned bots.

Föderation EN Mo 13.01.2025 16:23:29

@WarnerCrocker @Gargron Yes. I can’t keep doing this. It’s way too time consuming.

It’s not just the instance. Clearly, anyone can follow you so …

But if I can spot these from a mile away, then Gargron should be able to vet them and not allow them in.

@GottaLaff @gargron I don't even spend an hour a day at ...

Föderation EN Mo 13.01.2025 16:22:09

@GottaLaff @QueenOfTheCroneAge @Gargron I usually block any new followers from mastodon.social. They’re almost always bots.

Gargron's now formed a new non-profit

He's busy

@GottaLaff We have a CAPTCHA on sign-up that's supposed to be difficult for bots to break. In our experience, spam that gets through is operated by humans. We try to stay on top of the IP addresses and e-mail domains they use, but it's a cat and mouse game. I apologize for the inconvenience caused.

Föderation EN Mo 13.01.2025 16:29:54

@Gargron I appreciate that, but it’s getting WAY worse, not better.

There must be a way to key word the account names.

Föderation EN Mo 13.01.2025 22:56:52

@Gargron

Mildly related... a friend pointed out the other evening that they have a browser extension that solves Captchas. And therefore they are using a robot to persuade a robot that they themselves are human.

(Cue: <Mad World>)

@GottaLaff @Gargron This is indicative of the arms race.

Captchas used to work, but bots are getting better at beating those. There's also those outfits that outsource account creation to sweatshops and troll farms in the developing world.

Honestly, I wouldn't be shocked if at some point we'll see bot screening measures like "Select all squares that exemplify the nagging worry that you're unworthy of love and that if anyone looked behind your carefully crafted facade they'd run screaming."

@GottaLaff
Have you tried filters? They might be a bit brutal, though.

Föderation EN Mo 13.01.2025 17:29:55

@LarsFosdal That would affect my followers. I don’t want these accounts following me.

Föderation EN Mo 13.01.2025 18:27:25

@GottaLaff , @Gargron

Am guessing you don’t want to enable “request to follow” to keep it as easy as possible for folks to follow you.

New feature idea: add filtering-like capability to enable “request to follow” gate. Additional useful filter types: age of account, number of posts, followers etc

Separately implement similar filter flow to automatically reject “request to follow”

@LarsFosdal

@stepheneb @GottaLaff @LarsFosdal You can filter notifications from new accounts if you click the gear above notifications in the web app.

Föderation EN Mo 13.01.2025 19:06:32

@Gargron @stepheneb @LarsFosdal

And to respond to request... I still have to vet. That's the issue. I spend hours vetting, no matter if they're "requests to follow," or just follows.

I used to ignore, but now there are so many, I can't.

Föderation EN Mo 13.01.2025 19:33:10

@GottaLaff @Gargron @stepheneb @LarsFosdal

Respectful suggestion here. Requests to follow should have an expiration date, so community influencers like Laffy don’t have to comb through hundreads of bots. The requests she ignores in 10, 20 or 30 days will simply get rejected.

I understand your pain Laffy you are the target of these bot because you have a ton of followers and every post of yours is widely commented and shared.

I agree, good idea, Drip. And, just chiming in on the request for some moderation of the obvious bots. I don’t get as slammed as Laffy, but I too have been having to spend a lot of time blocking. @GottaLaff @Drip_Drip_Drip @Gargron
