In this searing investigative report on , @davetroy asks how are the users flocking there safe from EXACTLY THE SAME THING that happened at Twitter/X?

america2.news/without-sky-soci

"Notably, Musk has not made any mention of Bluesky and the exodus of some 20 million people from X. In the past, he has railed against Threads and Substack. This time... crickets. It's as if he has a plan in mind to use Bluesky to his advantage. Perhaps he intends to buy it. We don't know. Plan accordingly."

@mastodonmigration @davetroy This observation about Mastodon baffles me:

"But many users found the distributed model, which operates in a manner similar to email, confusing. They have become accustomed to centralized solutions ..."

Like email, Mastodon feels centralized to me. It doesn't matter what servers posts come from, I can interact like it's one central service.

Only recently has this become clumsier, thanks to the not-quite-federated Threads and Bluesky.

@mbrailer @davetroy

Interesting point that rather than simplify things that the 'partial' federation of Threads and Bluesky has contributed to impressions of complexity and confusion. Had not thought about it this way.

Föderation EN Sa 23.11.2024 19:06:02

@mastodonmigration

"partial" is being generous. I've found if I follow someone on bluesky via the bridge I can only interact with posts they make. Not re-posts or any bluesky replies to their posts. It's extremely limited.

Don't know what the Threads experience is like, my instance doesn't federate.

@mbrailer @mastodonmigration I agree personally. But a popular narrative holds otherwise. I’m not sure why. Another factor may have been performance variations during growth spurts that varied across instances and thus shaping popular perception.

Föderation EN Sa 23.11.2024 16:37:10

@davetroy @mbrailer

Actually think 90% of the friction actually derives from how the Mastodon app doesn't look like Twitter, and not so much the distributed architecture.

Föderation EN Sa 23.11.2024 16:37:55

@davetroy @mbrailer @mastodonmigration People don't like a few things here. I've asked. They don't like instances, they find it confusing. I don't, but that's me.

They say they have less reach here, that fewer people read their posts. I find that to be the opposite, they need to put in minimal effort and they'll see results.

They say it's "unstable" here. Glitches, crashes, etc. during upgrades, etc. True, that happens, but to me, not a dealbreaker.

@davetroy @mbrailer @mastodonmigration propaganda is a powerful thing.

And, newsflash, nobody is immune.

are absolutely, completely evil, there is not a single redeeming feature in them. Trying the same thing (walled garden socmedia, owned by techbro billionaires) and expecting different results is madness, and a sure sign that the smarts are not cranking.

Patronizing DTBOs with your presence gives the techbros power, and they ALWAYS use it to further . Using and is also an act of disregard for others, and a political statement; that your apathy and mental laziness are more relevant than the push of narrative for removal/denial of the humanity in others.

Laugh if you will, but ::motions at everything happening now::

@mbrailer @mastodonmigration @davetroy Finding profiles on mastodon and following them if they're on different servers is still really clumsy/annoying imo

Föderation EN So 24.11.2024 05:50:34

@deskJet95 @mbrailer @davetroy

Different servers shouldn't matter.

If you know the account name, or close to it, you can simply type it into search as shown below for your account.

Also, @FediTips explains ways of finding accounts: fedi.tips/how-do-i-find-accoun

And, Fedi.tips has an extensive directory: fedi.directory/fedi-tips/

@deskJet95 @mbrailer @mastodonmigration it’s really very straightforward.

Föderation EN So 24.11.2024 07:27:45

@davetroy @deskJet95 @mbrailer

Agreed. Wrote a longer post to answer this, but the bottom line is this kind of knee jerk criticism is really unfounded, but typical of the public's perception of Mastodon.

Föderation EN So 24.11.2024 07:42:46

@mastodonmigration @deskJet95 @mbrailer I think having an app named “Mastodon” and suggesting it’s the best experience out there has been a mistake also. There are a lot of clients and most people don’t know about them.

Föderation EN So 24.11.2024 07:54:56

@davetroy @deskJet95 @mbrailer

You are right. People equate 'Mastodon' with the Fediverse. Or more precisely 'Mastodon' obscures perception of the Fediverse. It is hard for people to understand 1) that Mastodon writ large is lots of Mastodon servers interconnect via the Fediverse, and 2) the Fediverse also interconnects other great applications, and 3) the applications can all talk to each other. 🤔

People recoil from this. Throw up their hands, and conclude it's all too complicated.

@deskJet95 @mbrailer @mastodonmigration @davetroy

It's trickier if you're trying to follow them from their own websites.

If you're following from within your own server, it's seamless. (For example, if you click on my name to go go my profile and click follow, it will work just like you were clicking on a profile from your own server.)
