What's everyone using for mapping these days? If I need to recommend mapping and routing tools to someone who doesn't need to have their plans broadcast to the world, do I hand them paper and a magnifying glass? Or is there something decent that leaves me in control?

@Sempf Kagi has a maps mode they're developing. It's still early so I'm not sure I'd suggest subscribing for it alone, but it can tell you the directions to a place. Don't think it has live navigation yet though.

@kevinmirsky Hmm, I'll look into it!

@Sempf is openstreetmap okay, I haven’t used it but I’ve heard the name.

@hotsoup I think that's a start yes.

@Sempf For planning ahead, @openstreetmap is good in the browser, on the road I like Magic Earth as app (substitutes Google Maps pretty well, not open source, but seems more prone to privacy than Google...). There is also an app called Organic Maps on @fdroidorg, which has a good reputation, but I have not used it so far.
Does that help?

@DresdnerForschungswerk @Sempf @openstreetmap @fdroidorg I'm using it for years and can recommend it. Not as powerful as OsmAnd – but much easier to handle and more intuitive. Perfect for daily use. If you have an account with OSM, you can even use OM to contribute by adding/updating details.

Just give it a try – and I'd be surprised if it doesn't "stick" with you 😉

@IzzyOnDroid @DresdnerForschungswerk @openstreetmap @fdroidorg You are all next level awesome. Bonus internet points for all!

Yes, this helps a ton. I'm working with some folks who genuinely are at some risk with the current location information being tracked, and these suggestions are exactly what I need.

@Sempf Depends on the use case, but I really do usually prefer physical maps and compass, and not just because of security or privacy concerns. Obviously it doesn't work for everything though.

Föderation EN Do 23.01.2025 18:33:41

@cR0w Right. Perfect for me (eagle scout 1987 babie!) but not for my user base in this case.

Föderation EN Do 23.01.2025 18:36:19

@Sempf That's fair. I've used different apps but nothing works anywhere as simply as Google Maps, unfortunately. Some of the hiking apps like Gaia work okay offline if you preload a route, but I don't know if that works any better for your users.

Föderation EN Do 23.01.2025 18:42:24

@cR0w Ooo, outside the box thinking, me likey.

Did you hear about some running app that has disclosed the location of five secret US bases?

"Bunch folks running in a circle ..... in the deep woods of Tennessee. There's nothing out ther ... well shit look at that."

Föderation EN Do 23.01.2025 18:44:18

@Sempf Yeah. Strava, IIRC.
